Hemodialysis is a very specialized area that can accommodate 12 treatments per day. Each treatment lasts for 4 hours for both in-patients and out-patients.

The following steps are guide for smooth relationship for the good of the hemodialysis patients:

I. Entry Requirements
   1. A qualifying evaluation of the patient’s condition, diagnosis and a written order of the AMD who is Board Certified Nephrologist in the OLLH
   2. Completion and submission of Schedule/Consent and Pre-Hemodialysis Checklist.

II. Services The Hemo Unit has 8 hours staff coverage. The staff renders: 
   1. Hemodialysis for both in-patients and out-patients 
   2. all treatments, medications (due within the hemodialysis period), and pre and post-dialysis blood extractions.
   3. medical and nursing services during the session
   4. instructions to patients and relatives about the facts on the care for hemodialysis patients.

III. Scheduling
   1. Each patient is given a 4-hours stay Morning session : 7:00 – 11:00 Afternoon session : 12:00 – 4:00 The schedule is arranged by the staff on first come, first served basis.
   2. For in-patients: the ward nurse informs the hemodialysis nurse by phone and asks for the time slot. A schedule/consent and pre-hemodialysis checklist is submitted to the Hemodialysis Unit.
   3. For out-patients: Arrangement with the staff is done the day before. If slots are available, they are accepted. Patients who cannot be accommodated are referred to other Hemodialysis Centers.
   4. All patients are required to be in the Hemodialysis Unit 15 minutes before the dialysis session unless advised otherwise.
   5. Change of schedule:
       5.1 Patients with regular date and time for hemodialysis who are not able to come as scheduled, may call the Hemodialysis Unit the day before - to inquire for possibility of a session on another day without extra charge. They are accommodated as long as there are vacant slots.
       5.2 Patients with regular date and time of dialysis who come out of the schedule without prior notice are evaluated by the AMD at the E.R. as to the urgency of the treatment. If dialysis is not indicated, they are advised to wait for their regular turn. If a “stat” hemodialysis is needed, they pay an extra charge.
       5.3 Patients who do not come for (2) consecutive dialysis sessions without notice or previous arrangement are removed from the schedule. Their slots are given to other patients.
       5.4 Patients who come later than 7:15 am for the morning session will forfeit their schedule for that day, unless there are free slots after regular sessions.

IV. Emergency Hemodialysis:
    1. Priority is given according to the severity of the case.
    2. A qualifying evaluation, diagnosis and a written order of the AMD or Senior Resident are attached to the patient’s records and submitted to the hemodialysis nurse.
   3. For emergencies after 4:00 PM, call either the coordinator, Nursing Service Director or Nurse Supervisor on duty they will notify the Hemo Nurse.

V. Charges:
    1. Preparation of the dialyzer takes 30 minutes and entails expenses. If the patient is absent without prior notice, these expenses are charged to the patient.
    2. Charge slips of in-patients are dropped at the Accounting Office. All out-patients pay at the Accounting Department. An official receipt is presented to the nurse before discharge.
    3. Laboratory exams for out-patients are paid in cash at the Laboratory.
